Explicação
There are two uses. ① Place: along something long, such as a river, road, or line (川に沿って). ② Standard: acting in line with a plan, policy, manual, or someone's wishes (方針に沿って, 希望に沿った). Use ② is close to に基づいて, but に沿って suggests keeping to a set course or meeting someone's wishes.

Walk along this road for about ten minutes and you will come out at the station.

Observações
The potential form also appears in business (ご希望に沿えるよう努力します). In use ①, it attaches to long things like rivers, roads, tracks, or coasts.
