Formation
- N1 + という + N2(名前)
- 普通形 + という + N(話・ニュース・連絡・意味 など)
Explanation
There are two main uses. (1) To introduce a name the listener may not know: 山田さんという人 (a person called Yamada); 何という〜 asks for a name. (2) To give the content of a noun such as 話, ニュース, 連絡, or 意味: 雨が降るという話 (the story that it will rain). In use (2), だ often follows na-adjectives and nouns.

Notes
In writing, という is usually in hiragana, not 言う. In casual speech it often becomes って (山田さんって人).
