Questions
Is it really free?
Yes. Every lesson, mock test and grammar page on this site is free and needs no account. The Japatan iPhone app adds flashcards for 7,500+ JLPT words, audio and spaced repetition.
Where should I start?
If you cannot read hiragana yet, start with the Starter course. Otherwise take the level test: 30 questions tell you which course fits you.
Are the mock tests real past papers?
No. Past JLPT papers are copyrighted, so all questions here are original. They follow the official question types and number of questions for the vocabulary, grammar and reading sections. Listening is not included.
How was the answer key checked?
Every question was solved by independent checkers who could not see the answer key, and any question where their answers differed from the key was rewritten or corrected.
How does the streak work?
Finish at least one lesson, quiz or test in a day and your streak grows by one. Miss a day and it starts again from one.
Is my progress saved?
Yes, in this browser only. Nothing is sent to a server, so clearing your browser data also clears your progress.
