「おおきに」って 何なん? What is "ookini"?

先週せんしゅう、大阪おおさかの 店みせで パンを 買かった とき、店員てんいんさんに 「おおきに」と 言いわれました。Last week, when I bought bread at a shop in Osaka, the clerk said "ookini" to me.

私わたしは 「おおきに」が どういう 意味いみか 分わからなくて、「大おおきい パンが いいですか」という 意味いみだと 思おもいました。I didn't know what "ookini" meant, so I thought it meant "Would you like a big loaf?"

家いえに 帰かえって 調しらべて みると、「ありがとう」という 意味いみの 方言ほうげんでした。When I went home and looked it up, I found it was a dialect word meaning "thank you."

日本にほんでは、地方ちほうが 違ちがうと、言葉ことばも 少すこし 違ちがいます。普通ふつうの 言葉ことばと 違ちがう、その 地方ちほうの 言葉ことばを 「方言ほうげん」と 言いいます。In Japan, when the region is different, the words are a little different too. The local words of a region that differ from ordinary words are called "hougen" (dialect).

たとえば、北海道ほっかいどうでは 「疲つかれた」を 「こわい」と 言いう 人ひとも いるそうです。For example, I heard that in Hokkaido some people say "kowai" to mean "I'm tired."

普通ふつうの 「こわい」とは 意味いみが ぜんぜん 違ちがうので、びっくりしました。That is completely different from the usual meaning of "kowai" (scary), so I was surprised.

日本にほんには 「所ところ変かわれば 品しな変かわる」という ことわざが あります。場所ばしょが 変かわると、ものも 変かわる という 意味いみです。Japan has a proverb, "Tokoro kawareba shina kawaru." It means that when the place changes, things change too.

方言ほうげんは その 地方ちほうだけの 特別とくべつな 言葉ことばで、人ひとの 気持きもちを あたたかく 伝つたえて くれると 思おもいます。A dialect is a special language of its own region, and I think it conveys people's feelings warmly.

これから、ほかの 地方ちほうでは 「ありがとう」を 何なんと 言いうか 調しらべて みる つもりです。From now on, I plan to look up what people say for "thank you" in other regions.

そして、今度こんど 大阪おおさかへ 行いったら、私わたしも 「おおきに」と 言いって みたいです。And next time I go to Osaka, I want to try saying "ookini" myself.
