N4 Grammar 2/60

可能形

Potential form: can do, be able to do

Formation

  • グループ1: 「う段だん」→「え段だん」+ る(書かく → 書かける、読よむ → 読よめる、話はなす → 話はなせる)
  • グループ2: る → られる(食たべる → 食たべられる、見みる → 見みられる)
  • グループ3: する → できる、来くる → 来こられる

Explanation

The potential form means the same as 〜ことができます and is more common in conversation. It expresses a person's ability (漢字が読めます, I can read kanji) and what is possible in a place or situation (ここで写真が撮れます, You can take photos here). The object particle を often changes to が (ピアノを弾く → ピアノが弾ける). A potential verb conjugates like a Group 2 verb: 書けます, 書けない, 書けた.

Examples

  • 私わたしは 日本語にほんごの 新聞しんぶんが 少すこし 読よめます。

I can read Japanese newspapers a little.

  • 辛からい 物ものは あまり 食たべられません。

I can't really eat spicy food.

  • この 図書館としょかんでは 夜よる 九時くじまで 勉強べんきょうできます。

You can study in this library until nine at night.

  • A: 明日あしたの パーティーに 来こられますか。
    B: すみません、明日あしたは 仕事しごとで 行いけないんです。

A: Can you come to the party tomorrow? B: I'm sorry, I can't go because of work tomorrow.

Notes

In casual speech, Group 2 verbs and 来る often drop ら (食べれる, 見れる, 来れる), but use られる in tests and writing. 分かる already includes the idea of ability, so it is not put into the potential form (not 日本語が分かれます but 日本語が分かります). 見える and 聞こえる mean something naturally comes into sight or hearing, while 見られる and 聞ける mean the conditions allow you to watch or listen.

1私わたしは 五百ごひゃくメートルぐらい ( )。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 2 泳およげます

"I can swim about 500 meters." 泳ぐ is a Group 1 verb, so ぐ changes to げ and る is added: 泳げる, polite 泳げます. The sound must stay voiced (げ, not け), and る is not attached to 泳ぎ or 泳ぐ.

2A: 明日あしたの 朝あさ 九時くじに ここへ ( )か。
B: はい、大丈夫だいじょうぶです。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 3 こられます

A asks "Can you come here at nine tomorrow morning?" Because of ここへ, the verb is 来る. Its potential form is irregular and is read こられる (来られる), not きられる or くられる.

3昨日きのうの 夜よるは とても 暑あつかったですから、よく ( )。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 1 寝ねられませんでした

"It was very hot last night, so I couldn't sleep well." 寝る is a Group 2 verb, so る changes to られる: 寝られる. A potential verb conjugates like a Group 2 verb, so the polite past negative is 寝られませんでした. The other forms do not exist.
