Explains a situation or reason, or asks for an explanation
〜んです adds an explanatory tone. Use it to explain a situation or reason the listener does not know (頭が痛いんです, It's that I have a headache), or to ask for an explanation of something you have seen or heard (どうしたんですか, What happened?). 〜んですが、… gives background before a request or question. In writing or formal speech it is 〜のです; among friends it becomes 〜んだ or 〜の?
A: どうしたんですか。
B: 頭が 痛いんです。
A: What's wrong? B: I have a headache.
A: もう 帰るんですか。
B: ええ、今日は 娘の 誕生日なんです。
A: Are you going home already? B: Yes, it's my daughter's birthday today.
Potential form: can do, be able to do
The potential form means the same as 〜ことができます and is more common in conversation. It expresses a person's ability (漢字が読めます, I can read kanji) and what is possible in a place or situation (ここで写真が撮れます, You can take photos here). The object particle を often changes to が (ピアノを弾く → ピアノが弾ける). A potential verb conjugates like a Group 2 verb: 書けます, 書けない, 書けた.
私は 日本語の 新聞が 少し 読めます。
I can read Japanese newspapers a little.
辛い 物は あまり 食べられません。
I can't really eat spicy food.
アリはじめまして。今日、隣に 引っ越した アリです。挨拶に 来ました。Nice to meet you. I'm Ali, I moved in next door today. I came to say hello.
佐藤佐藤です。よろしく お願いします。日本語が 上手ですね。I'm Sato. Nice to meet you. Your Japanese is good.
アリ少し 話せます。あのう、ちょっと 困って いるんですが……。I can speak a little. Um, actually, I have a small problem...
佐藤どうしたんですか。What's wrong?
アリごみの カレンダーを もらいましたが、漢字が 読めないんです。I got a garbage calendar, but I can't read the kanji.
佐藤ああ、ごみの 日は 火曜日と 金曜日ですよ。朝 出して ください。Oh, garbage days are Tuesday and Friday. Please put it out in the morning.
アリ佐藤さんは 親切ですね。この 近所に 長く 住んで いるんですか。You're very kind, Ms. Sato. Have you lived in this neighborhood for a long time?
佐藤いいえ、実は 私も 先月 引っ越したんです。まだ 生活に 慣れて いません。No, actually I moved here last month too. I'm still not used to life here.
佐藤でも、ごみの 日だけは 覚えられました。三回 違う 日に 出しましたから。But I've managed to learn the garbage days, at least. I put it out on the wrong day three times.
アリそうなんですか。じゃあ、私は 佐藤さんの 後で 出します。Is that so? Then I'll put mine out after you do.

R1アリさんは どうして 困って いましたか。
Answer: 2 ごみの カレンダーの 漢字が 読めなかったから
Ali says he got a garbage calendar but cannot read the kanji. He says he can speak a little Japanese, so 3 is wrong.
R2佐藤さんについて、正しいのは どれですか。
Answer: 3 ごみを 違う 日に 出した ことが ある。
Sato says she put the garbage out on the wrong day three times. She moved last month, so 1 and 4 are wrong, and she has already learned the garbage days, so 2 is wrong.
1日本に 来て 三か月です。生活にも もう ( )。
Answer: 2 慣れました
生活に慣れる means to get used to a new life. 'It has been three months since I came to Japan. I have already gotten used to life here.' The other words cannot follow 生活に.
2道が 分からなくて、( )いました。
Answer: 4 困って
'I didn't know the way, so I was in trouble.' 困る fits a problem like this. The other words do not connect with the first part of the sentence.
3駅で 道を 聞きました。駅の 人は とても ( )でした。
Answer: 1 親切
'I asked the way at the station. The station staff were very kind.' 親切 describes a person. 近所, 生活 and 隣 are nouns for places or things, so they do not fit.
4A「泳ぐ ことが できますか。」
B「はい、少し ( )。」
Answer: 3 泳げます
'Can you swim? Yes, I can swim a little.' For 泳ぐ, change ぐ to げ and add る: 泳げる. 泳がれます is the passive form, not the potential form.
5A「この 魚は 生で ( )か。」
B「はい、大丈夫ですよ。」
Answer: 4 食べられます
'Can I eat this fish raw? Yes, it's fine.' For ru-verbs like 食べる, change る to られる. 食べります, 食べけます and 食べるます are not real forms.
6A「元気が ないですね。どう( )ですか。」
B「ちょっと 頭が 痛いんです。」
Answer: 2 したん
'You don't look well. What's wrong? I have a bit of a headache.' To ask about something you notice, say どうしたんですか. ~んです follows the plain form, so したですか and しますですか are wrong.
7来月、隣の 町に 引っ越します。
Answer: 3 となり
隣 is read となり. 'Next month I'm moving to the next town.'
8この 近所に 病院は ありますか。
Answer: 1 きんじょ
近所 is read きんじょ, with a voiced じょ. 'Is there a hospital in this neighborhood?'
