Formación
- グループ1: 「う段」→「え段」+ る(書く → 書ける、読む → 読める、話す → 話せる)
- グループ2: る → られる(食べる → 食べられる、見る → 見られる)
- グループ3: する → できる、来る → 来られる
Explicación
The potential form means the same as 〜ことができます and is more common in conversation. It expresses a person's ability (漢字が読めます, I can read kanji) and what is possible in a place or situation (ここで写真が撮れます, You can take photos here). The object particle を often changes to が (ピアノを弾く → ピアノが弾ける). A potential verb conjugates like a Group 2 verb: 書けます, 書けない, 書けた.
Ejemplos

A: 明日の パーティーに 来られますか。
B: すみません、明日は 仕事で 行けないんです。A: Can you come to the party tomorrow? B: I'm sorry, I can't go because of work tomorrow.
Notas
In casual speech, Group 2 verbs and 来る often drop ら (食べれる, 見れる, 来れる), but use られる in tests and writing. 分かる already includes the idea of ability, so it is not put into the potential form (not 日本語が分かれます but 日本語が分かります). 見える and 聞こえる mean something naturally comes into sight or hearing, while 見られる and 聞ける mean the conditions allow you to watch or listen.
