N1 Grammar 48/60

〜に足る

Worthy of ~; enough to ~

Formation

  • V辞書形 + に足る + N
  • N(する動詞の名詞) + に足る + N(信頼・尊敬・満足 など)
  • 取るに足らない(慣用句:ささいな)

Explanation

Means "worthy of ~" or "sufficient to ~". It usually comes before a noun, as in 信頼に足る人物 (a person worthy of trust) or 証明するに足るデータ (data sufficient to prove it). It is formal. The negative 〜に足らない means "not worth ~"; in particular 取るに足らない (trivial, insignificant) is a common set phrase.

Examples

  • 田中たなかさんは、後輩こうはいにとって 尊敬そんけいに足たる先輩せんぱいだ。

Tanaka is a senior colleague truly worthy of respect from the juniors.

  • 今回こんかいの実験じっけんでは、仮説かせつを 証明しょうめいするに足たるデータが得えられなかった。

This experiment did not yield data sufficient to prove the hypothesis.

  • 旅行りょこう会社がいしゃの説明せつめいは、客きゃくを 納得なっとくさせるに足たるものではなかった。

The travel agency's explanation was not enough to convince the customers.

  • 毎日まいにちの小ちいさな悩なやみも、後あとから考かんがえれば 取とるに足たらないことが多おおい。

Looking back, many of our small daily worries turn out to be trivial.

Notes

Close to 〜に値する, but に足る stresses sufficiency. In speech, people say 〜できる or 〜する価値がある instead.
