N2 Gramática 46/60

〜たかと思うと

No sooner had ~ than ~ (sudden change)

Formação

  • Vた形 + かと思うと
  • Vた形 + かと思ったら

Explicação

Means B happened right after A, often unexpectedly. It describes something the speaker observed with surprise, or a sudden change; A and B are often opposites, as in crying and then laughing. It is not used for the speaker's own actions, and the second clause cannot express intention or a request.

Exemplos

Observações

Do not use it for your own actions. While か〜ないかのうちに stresses near-simultaneity, たかと思うと focuses on the sudden or surprising change after A.
