Today's grammar

There is / there are; to have

Formation
  • N(物・植物・こと) + が + あります

These sentences say that something or someone exists. Use あります for things and plants (which do not move by themselves) and います for people and animals. The thing that exists is marked with が. The same pattern also means "have": 私は 車が あります (I have a car), 妹が います (I have a younger sister). あります is also used for time and events: 時間が あります, テストが あります. The negatives are ありません and いません.

Examples

    I have a car.

    I have a younger sister. I don't have a younger brother.

There is ~ in / at ~ (existence in a place)

Formation

場所 に N が あります/います tells what or who is in a place. The place of existence is marked with に. Use あります for things and います for people and animals. To say where a known thing or person is, use N You can give the place more exactly with position words: N の 上 (on), 下 (under), 中 (in), 前 (in front of), 後ろ (behind), となり (next to), 近く (near).

Examples

There is a dictionary on the desk.

There is a cat under the chair.

Quiz

Answer and explanation

Answer: 2 下した

"The cat is not on the chair. It is ( ) the chair." Since it is not 上 (on), the answer is 下 (under). いすの何 and いすの机 make no sense.

Answer and explanation

Answer: 4 います

"There is a cat in the room." Use います for people and animals, and あります for things. A cat is an animal, so います is correct.

Answer and explanation

Answer: 1

"There is a bed and a desk in my ( )." The place with a bed and a desk is 部屋 (room). A bed cannot be in a cat or a clock, and 私の上 does not fit.

Answer and explanation

Answer: 3 に

"The teacher is in the classroom." The place where someone or something exists takes に. で marks the place of an action, so it is not used with います or あります.

Answer and explanation

Answer: 2

"There are ( ) and chairs in the classroom." 机 (desk) is a thing, so it fits with あります. 下, 上 and 中 are position words, so they cannot be listed with いす as things in the room.

Answer and explanation

Answer: 1 が

"There is a book in the bag." In the pattern 〜に 〜が あります, the thing that exists takes が.

Answer and explanation

Answer: 3

The correct order is 1→4→3→2: 机の上に 時計が あります (There is a clock on the desk). The star is 時計が.

Answer and explanation

Answer: 4 うえ

In 机の上, 上 is read うえ (on, top). The sentence means "There is a dictionary on the desk." した is the reading of 下.
