落おとした顕微鏡けんびきょう The microscope I dropped

大学院だいがくいん一年いちねんの秋あき、わたしは研究室けんきゅうしつの顕微鏡けんびきょうを床ゆかに落おとしてしまった。In the autumn of my first year of graduate school, I dropped the lab's microscope on the floor.

実験じっけんを急いそいでいたため、片手かたてで運はこぼうとしたのだ。完全かんぜんにわたしの不注意ふちゅういだった。I was in a hurry with my experiment, so I tried to carry it with one hand. It was entirely my own carelessness.

値段ねだんを調しらべると百万円ひゃくまんえん近ちかくする。これは弁償べんしょうせずにはすまないと覚悟かくごした。When I looked up the price, it was close to one million yen. I resigned myself to the fact that I would have to pay for it.

どう釈明しゃくめいしても、許ゆるされることではないだろう。その夜よるは一睡いっすいもできなかった。No matter how I explained myself, it would not be forgiven. That night I didn't sleep a wink.

翌朝よくあさ、わたしは貯金ちょきんの通帳つうちょうを持もって教授きょうじゅの部屋へやを訪たずね、深ふかく頭あたまを下さげた。The next morning, I went to the professor's office with my savings passbook and bowed deeply.

すると教授きょうじゅは通帳つうちょうを押おし返かえし、「形かたちあるものはいつか壊こわれる。お金かねではなく、二度にどと同おなじ失敗しっぱいをしないことで償つぐないなさい」と言いった。The professor pushed the passbook back and said, "Anything with a form breaks someday. Make up for it not with money, but by never making the same mistake again."

あまりに寛大かんだいな言葉ことばに、わたしは返事へんじもできなかった。His words were so generous that I couldn't even reply.

後あとで先輩せんぱいから聞きいた話はなしでは、教授きょうじゅも学生がくせいのころ、同おなじ型かたの顕微鏡けんびきょうを落おとしたことがあるそうだ。しかも、わたしが落おとしたまさにその一台いちだいを、である。I later heard from a senior student that the professor had also dropped a microscope of the same model when he was a student. And it was the very same one I had dropped.

そのとき恩師おんしに許ゆるしてもらった恩おんを、今いまは自分じぶんの学生がくせいに返かえしているのだという。Apparently he is now passing on to his own students the kindness he received when his teacher forgave him.

それ以来いらい、わたしは誰だれよりも慎重しんちょうに機材きざいを扱あつかい、誠意せいいをもって研究けんきゅうに取とり組くんでいる。Since then, I have handled equipment more carefully than anyone and worked on my research in good faith.

わたしは今いまも、あの教授きょうじゅを敬愛けいあいしてやまない。そしていつか後輩こうはいが何なにかを壊こわしたら、同おなじ言葉ことばをかけられる人ひとになりたいと願ねがってやまない。I still deeply love and respect that professor. And I truly hope that one day, when a junior student breaks something, I can be someone who says the same words to them.
