N4 Grammar 57/60

Want someone (or something) to do ~

Formation

Explanation

〜てほしい expresses a wish for someone else, not yourself, to do something. Mark that person with に. It can also be used for weather or events, as in 晴れてほしい (I hope it's sunny). For your own wish, use 〜たい. 〜ないでほしい means "I want someone not to do ~."

Examples

I want my friends to help me move.

I'd like you not to smoke inside the room.

Tomorrow is sports day, so I hope it's sunny.

I'd like you to look at my essay, sir. Do you have time now?

Notes

Saying 見てほしいです directly to a superior can sound pushy. Soften it with 〜てほしいんですが or a polite request form.
