N3 Grammar 60/60

〜に違いない

Must be ~ / I'm sure that ~

Formation

  • V普通形 + に違いない
  • いA + に違いない
  • なA + に違いない
  • N + に違いない

Explanation

Used when you feel sure about something based on what you have seen or heard. It is stronger than だろう or かもしれない. Na-adjectives and nouns connect directly, without だ. It is common in writing; in conversation people often say きっと〜だ instead.

Examples

  • 電気でんきが消きえている。田中たなかさんはもう 帰かえったに違ちがいない。

The lights are off. Tanaka must have gone home already.

  • こんなに人ひとが並ならんでいるから、あの店みせのラーメンは おいしいに違ちがいない。

With this many people lining up, that shop's ramen must be good.

  • マリアさんはいつも図書館としょかんにいる。本ほんが 好すきに違ちがいない。

Maria is always in the library. She must love books.

  • あの背せの高たかい人ひとは、バスケットボールの選手せんしゅに違ちがいない。

That tall person must be a basketball player.

Notes

~はずだ is a logical conclusion from facts or reasons; ~に違いない shows the speaker's strong personal conviction. Do not insert だ: 好きだに違いない is wrong.
