〜かもしれない

might ~; may ~ (possibility)

Formation

  • N + かもしれない(「だ」は付けない)
  • なA / N + だった + かもしれない

Explanation

Use this when something is possible but you are not sure. It shows less confidence than でしょう. The polite form is かもしれません. For the past, use the ta-form: 寝たかもしれない (may have gone to bed).

Notes

Do not put だ before かもしれない with na-adjectives and nouns: 静かかもしれない, not 静かだかもしれない. In casual speech, people often shorten it to かも.
