N3 Grammar 59/60

〜てしょうがない・〜てたまらない

So ~ I can't stand it / extremely ~

Formation

  • Vて形 + しょうがない・たまらない
  • いA(〜くて) + しょうがない・たまらない
  • なA + で + しょうがない・たまらない

Explanation

Expresses a feeling or physical sensation so strong you can't bear it, with words like うれしい, 寂しい, 暑い, 痛い, or 気になる. Both mean nearly the same, but ~てしょうがない is more casual. They describe the speaker's own feelings; for others, add ようだ or らしい.

Examples

  • 試験しけんの結果けっかが 気きになってしょうがない。

I can't stop worrying about the exam results.

  • 今日きょうは朝あさから 暑あつくてたまらない。

It has been unbearably hot since this morning.

  • 一人ひとりで外国がいこくに住すみ始はじめたころは、寂さびしくてたまらなかった。

When I first started living abroad alone, I was terribly lonely.

  • 明日あしたの旅行りょこうが 楽たのしみでしょうがない。

I'm so excited about tomorrow's trip I can hardly stand it.

Notes

~てしかたがない means the same and is slightly more formal. Na-adjectives connect with で, as in 心配でたまらない.

Mini quiz

1昨日きのうから歯はが( )たまらない。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 1 痛いたくて

My tooth has been hurting terribly since yesterday. I-adjectives take the くて form before たまらない, so 痛くてたまらない is correct.

2新あたらしい仕事しごとがうまくいくか、心配しんぱい( )しょうがない。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 3 で

I'm so worried about whether the new job will go well. 心配 is a na-adjective, so it connects with で: 心配でしょうがない.

3昨日きのうあまり寝ねていないので、眠ねむくて( )。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 4 たまらない

I didn't sleep much last night, so I'm terribly sleepy. 眠くてたまらない means extremely sleepy. The pattern is always negative, so たまる and しょうがある are wrong, and かまわない means 'it's OK', which does not fit.
