N2 Grammar 23/60

〜からといって

Just because ~ (doesn't mean ~)

Formation

  • V普通形 + からといって
  • いA + からといって
  • なA + だ + からといって
  • N + だ + からといって

Explanation

Means that one reason alone is not enough to conclude or justify something. The second half is negative, such as とは限らない, わけではない, わけにはいかない or てはいけない. It is often used to correct a common assumption or someone's judgment. In casual speech it becomes からって.

Examples

  • 値段ねだんが高たかいからといって、品質ひんしつがいいとは限かぎらない。

Just because something is expensive doesn't mean it's good quality.

  • 日本人にほんじんだからといって、敬語けいごが上手じょうずに使つかえるわけではない。

Just because someone is Japanese doesn't mean they can use honorific language well.

  • 少すこし熱ねつが下さがったからといって、すぐに会社かいしゃへ行いくのはよくない。

Just because your fever has gone down a little, it's not good to go straight back to work.

  • 暇ひまだからといって、一日中いちにちじゅうゲームをしていてはいけない。

Just because you're free doesn't mean you should play games all day.

Notes

The second half must be negative in meaning; it cannot simply state a result. Add だ after な-adjectives and nouns.

3「からといって」の使つかい方かたが正ただしい文ぶんはどれですか。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 4 忙いそがしいからといって、連絡れんらくしなくてもいいわけではない。

からといって needs a negative second half such as わけではない. Sentence 4 means: Just because you're busy doesn't mean you don't have to get in touch. Sentences 1, 2 and 3 simply give a reason and result, so ので or から is correct there.
