〜までもない

Formation

  • V辞書形 + までもない
  • V辞書形 + までもなく + 文
  • 言うまでもない/言うまでもなく(慣用)

Explanation

Means there is no need to bother doing something because the matter is minor or obvious, as in 医者に行くまでもない (no need to see a doctor). 言うまでもない (it goes without saying) and 言うまでもなく (needless to say) are very common set phrases.

Examples

  • 健康けんこうが何なにより大切たいせつなのは 言いうまでもない。

    It goes without saying that health matters more than anything.

  • この程度ていどの修理しゅうりなら、専門家せんもんかを 呼よぶまでもない。

    For a repair this simple, there's no need to call in a professional.

  • 駅えきはすぐそこなので、タクシーに 乗のるまでもない。

    The station is right there, so there's no need to take a taxi.

  • 地図ちずを 見みるまでもなく、道みちはすぐに分わかった。

    I found the way right away, without even needing to look at the map.

Notes

〜にはあたらない says a reaction (surprise, blame, etc.) is not justified, while 〜までもない says an action is unnecessary because it is easy or obvious.

Answer: 3 言いうまでもなく

"Lin can speak French, not to mention English." 言うまでもなく means "needless to say / not to mention". The other forms do not have this meaning.
