This is the negative of N です: "is not / am not / are not." じゃ is the spoken short form of では, so じゃありません is common in conversation, while ではありません is more formal and is preferred in writing. When you answer a question with いいえ, it sounds natural to add the correct information afterwards: いいえ、学生じゃありません。 (No, I'm not a student. I'm an office worker).
I'm not a student. I'm an office worker.
A: Is this your umbrella, Lin-san? B: No, it isn't mine.
This is not a bank. It's a post office.
Tomorrow is not a day off. (formal)
In conversation じゃないです is also common. This form is for nouns and な-adjectives only; い-adjectives have a different negative (〜くないです), which you will learn later.
