Turning verbs and adjectives into nouns
Adding の or こと turns a verb or adjective phrase into a noun. Often both work: 読むのが好きです / 読むことが好きです. Only の is used before verbs of seeing and hearing (見える, 聞こえる, 見る) and before 待つ or 手伝う, because the phrase describes something happening right there that you perceive or take part in directly. Only こと is used in set patterns such as 〜ことができる and 〜ことがある, and in "A is B" sentences like 趣味は〜ことです.
私は 寝る 前に 本を 読むのが 好きです。
I like reading books before going to bed.
窓から 子どもたちが 公園で 遊んで いるのが 見えます。
From the window, I can see the children playing in the park.
Change up to now / from now on; go and come back
There are two main uses. (1) Change over time: 〜てきた shows a change that has gradually happened up to now (or something that has just started, like rain), and 〜ていく shows a change that will continue from now on. (2) Direction of movement: 買ってくる means go, buy, and come back; 持っていく means take something with you as you leave.

でも、この 二十年で 工場が 増えて、森は 少しずつ 減って きました。But over the last twenty years, factories have increased, and the forest has been shrinking little by little.
森の 近くに ごみを 捨てて いく 人も いて、町の 人たちは 困って いました。Some people also dumped trash near the forest and left, and the townspeople were troubled.
そこで、去年の 春から 佐藤さんたち 五人が、毎週 日曜日に 森の ごみを ひろう ことを 始めました。So, starting last spring, a group of five people, including Sato, began picking up trash in the forest every Sunday.
佐藤さんは 「最初は 大変でしたが、今は 朝の きれいな 空気の 中を 歩くのが 楽しみです」と 話します。Sato says, "At first it was hard, but now I look forward to walking in the clean morning air."
最近は 一緒に ひろう 人が 増えて きて、今は 三十人ぐらいに なりました。Recently, more people have been joining them, and now there are about thirty.
森の ごみが 減って、鳥の 声も よく 聞こえるように なったそうです。They say that with less trash in the forest, birdsong can now be heard well.
「いちばん 多い ごみは 何だと 思いますか。じつは、かたほうだけの 手ぶくろなんです」と、佐藤さんは 笑います。"What do you think the most common trash is? Actually, it's single gloves without their pair," Sato says with a laugh.
佐藤さんたちは 「これからも 町の 自然を 守って いきたいです」と 話して います。Sato and the group say, "We want to keep protecting the town's nature from now on."
