You will read a conversation about choosing an inn and learn to say what matters to you. With 〜はともかく and 〜はもとより, you will learn to set a topic aside or add something to an obvious point.

Setting aside ~; ~ aside

Formação
  • N + はともかく(として)
  • V普通形 + かどうか + はともかく
  • 疑問詞 + V普通形 + か + はともかく

It means "let's leave ~ aside for now and talk about what follows." The speaker sets the first point aside rather than saying it is unimportant. It is often used when the first point is doubtful but the second is good, as in 味はともかく、量が多い. You can also say 〜はともかくとして.

Exemplos

  • この店みせは、味あじはともかく、量りょうが多おおくて安やすい。

    The taste aside, this restaurant gives you large portions at low prices.

  • 結果けっかはともかく、最後さいごまであきらめずに頑張がんばったことが大切たいせつだ。

    Whatever the result, what matters is that you kept trying to the end.

〜はもとより

Not to mention ~; ~ of course, and also

Formação
  • N + はもとより、N + も

It means "~ is obvious, and something else is also true." The first noun is the obvious case, and the second part adds something wider or less expected, often with も or まで. It means the same as 〜はもちろん but is more formal and written.

Exemplos

  • この祭まつりには、地元じもとの人ひとはもとより、海外かいがいからの観光客かんこうきゃくも大勢おおぜい訪おとずれる。

    This festival attracts many tourists from abroad, not to mention local people.

  • 彼女かのじょは英語えいごはもとより、フランス語ごも話はなせる。

    She speaks French, to say nothing of English.

リンまだ。値段ねだんはともかく、景色けしきがいい宿やどに泊とまりたいな。Not yet. Price aside, I want to stay somewhere with a nice view.

マリア賛成さんせい。せっかくだから、景色けしきはもとより、料理りょうりの評判ひょうばんもいいところがいいね。Agreed. Since we're going all that way, I'd like a place with a great view, of course, and a good reputation for its food too.

リンこの「山やまの上うえホテル」はどう? 窓まどから見みえる景色けしきが素晴すばらしいって。How about this "Yama no Ue Hotel"? They say the view from the windows is wonderful.

マリアでも、一泊いっぱく五万円ごまんえん! 宿泊しゅくはくだけでそんなに払はらうのは、ちょっと贅沢ぜいたくすぎない?But it's 50,000 yen a night! Isn't paying that much just for lodging a bit too extravagant?

リンそうだね。じゃあ、こっちの「川かわべり旅館りょかん」は? 料理りょうりが、地元じもとの人ひとはもとより、遠とおくから来くる客きゃくにも評判ひょうばんなんだって。True. Then how about this "Kawaberi Ryokan"? Its food is popular not only with locals but also with guests who come from far away.

マリア観光かんこう名所めいしょにも歩あるいて行いけるし、値段ねだんは半分はんぶんだね。景色けしきはどう?You can walk to the tourist sights, and it's half the price. What about the view?

リン夜よるは、窓まどから山やまの上うえホテルの明あかりがきれいに見みえるって。It says that at night you can see the lights of the Yama no Ue Hotel beautifully from the window.

マリア高たかいホテルを安やすい宿やどから眺ながめるなんて、ある意味いみ一番いちばん贅沢ぜいたくかもね。Gazing at the expensive hotel from a cheap inn—in a way, that might be the biggest luxury of all.
