Ever since A, things have changed (and stayed changed)

Formação
  • Vて形 + からというもの

A てからというもの B means that ever since A, which was a turning point, the state in B has continued. B describes a big change in behavior or circumstances compared to before. It sounds more emotional than plain てから. B cannot be a single event, an intention or a command.

Exemplos

  • 犬いぬを 飼かい始はじめてからというもの、毎朝まいあさ散歩さんぽするようになった。

    Ever since I got a dog, I've been going for a walk every morning.

  • 彼女かのじょは留学りゅうがくから 帰かえってきてからというもの、前まえよりずっと積極的せっきょくてきになった。

    Since she came back from studying abroad, she has become much more outgoing.

A を皮切りに B means that A is the first of a series of similar things that follow one after another and spread. It is used for fairly large-scale or growing events such as concert tours, store openings, opinions in a meeting, or festivals. It is not used for small everyday matters like what you ate for breakfast.

  • そのバンドは東京とうきょう を皮切かわきりに、全国ぜんこく20の都市としでコンサートを行おこなう。

    Starting in Tokyo, the band will give concerts in 20 cities nationwide.

元銀行員もとぎんこういん、落語らくごに出会であう A former banker discovers rakugo

今年ことし六十八歳ろくじゅうはっさいになる田中たなかさんは、定年ていねんまで銀行員ぎんこういんとして働はたらいた。家いえでは無口むくちで、趣味しゅみらしい趣味しゅみもなかったという。Mr. Tanaka, who turns 68 this year, worked as a banker until retirement. He says he was quiet at home and had no real hobbies to speak of.

そんな田中たなかさんが落語らくごに出会であったのは、退職たいしょくした年としの春はるだ。友人ゆうじんに誘さそわれて聞ききに行いき、一人ひとりで何百人なんびゃくにんもの客きゃくを笑わらわせる話はなし手てに心こころを奪うばわれた。He encountered rakugo in the spring of the year he retired. A friend invited him to a show, and he was captivated by a storyteller who made hundreds of people laugh all by himself.

落語らくごを始はじめてからというもの、田中たなかさんの生活せいかつは一変いっぺんした。Ever since he took up rakugo, Mr. Tanaka's life has changed completely.

朝あさは散歩さんぽしながら話はなしを覚おぼえ、夜よるは鏡かがみの前まえで練習れんしゅうに没頭ぼっとうする。In the morning he memorizes stories while taking a walk, and at night he immerses himself in practice in front of the mirror.

初はじめて人前ひとまえで披露ひろうしたのは、地元じもとの公民館こうみんかんだった。客きゃくは近所きんじょの人ひとたち十二人じゅうににんだけだった。The first time he performed in front of people was at the local community center. The audience was just twelve people from the neighborhood.

この公演こうえんを皮切かわきりに、田中たなかさんは老人ろうじんホームや小学校しょうがっこう、商店街しょうてんがいの祭まつりなど、各地かくちから呼よばれるようになった。Starting with this performance, Mr. Tanaka began to be invited to places everywhere, such as nursing homes, elementary schools, and shopping street festivals.

昨年さくねんは地元じもとの新聞しんぶんに「話はなし上手じょうずの元銀行員もとぎんこういん」として取とり上あげられ、思おもわぬ脚光きゃっこうを浴あびた。Last year, the local newspaper featured him as 'the former banker who is a great talker,' and he found himself unexpectedly in the spotlight.

今いまでは年ねんに三十回さんじゅっかいを超こえる舞台ぶたいに立たち、本人ほんにんも「定年後ていねんごの大躍進だいやくしんです」と笑わらう。Now he appears on stage more than thirty times a year, and he laughs, calling it 'my great leap after retirement.'

落語らくごは、今いまや田中たなかさんの生いきがいだ。Rakugo is now his purpose in life.

だが、奥おくさんにとっていちばんの変化へんかは別べつのところにあるらしい。「前まえは夕食ゆうしょくの時ときもほとんど話はなさなかったのに、今いまは食事中しょくじちゅうも落語らくごの話はなしばかりで、こちらが口くちをはさむ暇ひまもないんです」と苦笑くしょうする。For his wife, however, the biggest change seems to lie elsewhere. 'He used to hardly say a word even at dinner, but now he talks about rakugo all through the meal, and I can't get a word in,' she says with a wry smile.
