आजको व्याकरण

〜べからず・〜べからざる

Must not ~ (formal written prohibition)

बनावट
  • V辞書形 + べからず
  • V辞書形 + べからざる + N
  • する → す + べからず/べからざる(「するべからず」とも)

This is the negative of the classical auxiliary べし and expresses a strong prohibition. べからず ends a sentence and appears on signs, notices and mottos. べからざる comes before a noun and means "which must not / cannot be ~", as in 許すべからざる行為 (an unforgivable act) or 欠くべからざる存在 (an indispensable thing). Both are stiff written forms and are not used in everyday conversation.

उदाहरण

  • 芝生しばふに 入はいるべからず。

    Keep off the grass.

  • 関係者かんけいしゃ以外いがい、立たち入いるべからず。

No entry except for authorized persons.

It is a formal, written expression, preceded by a noun of emotion, and usually describes the speaker's own feelings.

उदाहरण

  • 七十代ななじゅうだいで大学だいがくを卒業そつぎょうした女性じょせいの話はなしには、驚おどろきを禁きんじ得えない。

I cannot help being amazed by the story of a woman who graduated from university in her seventies.

見学記「天井の裏の猫」 Visit report: The cat behind the ceiling

職人しょくにんたちは、文化財ぶんかざいとしての価値かちを損そこなわないよう、古ふるい木材もくざいをできるだけ残のこして修復しゅうふくしているという。The craftsmen say they keep as much of the old wood as possible when restoring it, so as not to damage its value as a cultural property.

新あたらしい木きを古ふるい柱はしらにつなぐ技わざはとても精巧せいこうで、どこが継つぎ目めなのか、私わたしにはまったく分わからなかった。Their technique of joining new wood to the old pillars was so precise that I couldn't tell at all where the joints were.

参加者さんかしゃからは驚嘆きょうたんの声こえが上あがり、私わたしも驚おどろきを禁きんじ得えなかった。Cries of amazement rose from the participants, and I too could not help being astonished.

最後さいごに、職人しょくにんの一人ひとりが天井てんじょう近ちかくの太ふとい木きの裏側うらがわをライトで照てらして見みせてくれた。At the end, one of the craftsmen lit up the back of a thick beam near the ceiling with a flashlight to show us.

そこには、小ちいさな猫ねこの絵えが彫ほられていた。四百年よんひゃくねん前まえの大工だいくが残のこしたいたずらだそうだ。A small cat was carved there. It was apparently a little prank left by a carpenter 400 years ago.

見みえない場所ばしょでも手てを抜ぬかない仕事しごとと、その遊あそび心ごころに、私わたしは深ふかい感銘かんめいを受うけた。I was deeply moved by work that cut no corners even where no one could see, and by its playful spirit.

帰かえり際ぎわ、職人しょくにんは「実じつは私わたしたちも一ひとつ隠かくしました。場所ばしょは秘密ひみつです」と笑わらった。四百年後よんひゃくねんごに、誰だれかがそれを見みつけるのだろう。As we were leaving, the craftsman laughed and said, "Actually, we hid one too. The location is a secret." Someone will probably find it 400 years from now.
