〜でしょう

probably ~ (a guess); ~, right? (asking for agreement)

Formation
  • V普通形 + でしょう
  • いA普通形 + でしょう
  • なA + でしょう（「だ」を取る）
  • N + でしょう（「だ」を取る）

でしょう has two uses. (1) Guess: with falling intonation, it says something is probably true when you are not sure. It is common in weather forecasts and often goes with たぶん (probably). (2) Confirmation: with rising intonation, it checks that the listener agrees or knows, like "..., right?" or "isn't it?" The word before でしょう is in the plain form, but だ is dropped after na-adjectives and nouns: 雨でしょう, 静かでしょう.

Examples

  • 明日あしたは たぶん 雨あめでしょう。

    It will probably rain tomorrow.

  • 田中たなかさんは 忙いそがしいですから、たぶん 来こないでしょう。

    Tanaka-san is busy, so I guess Tanaka-san won't come.

〜だけ・〜しか〜ない

only ~ (しか is used with a negative)

Formation
  • N／数量 + だけ
  • N／数量 + しか + V（否定の形：〜ません・〜ない）

Both mean "only." だけ simply limits something and can be used in a positive sentence: 百円だけ あります (I have just 100 yen). しか must be used with a negative form, but the meaning is still "only"; it adds the feeling that the amount is small or not enough: 百円しか ありません (I have only 100 yen). が and を may be dropped after だけ, and しか replaces が and を: 水しか 飲みません.

Examples

  • 今朝けさは コーヒーだけ 飲のみました。

    This morning I only had coffee.

  • この 店みせは 日曜日にちようびだけ 休やすみです。

    This shop is closed only on Sundays.

明日あしたの 天気てんきです。午前ごぜんは 曇くもりですが、午後ごごは 晴はれるでしょう。Here is tomorrow's weather. It will be cloudy in the morning, but it will probably clear up in the afternoon.

朝あさは 風かぜが 強つよいでしょう。でも、強つよい 風かぜは 朝あさだけでしょう。The wind will probably be strong in the morning. But the strong wind will probably be only in the morning.

夜よるは 寒さむく なって、雪ゆきが 降ふるでしょう。でも、雪ゆきは 少すこししか 降ふらないでしょう。At night it will get cold, and it will probably snow. But only a little snow will probably fall.

明日あしたの 夜よる 出でかける 人ひとは、暖あたたかい コートを 着きて ください。If you are going out tomorrow night, please wear a warm coat.

あさっては 一日いちにち 晴はれるでしょう。夜よるは 空そらが とても きれいでしょう。星ほしを たくさん 見みる ことが できるでしょう。The day after tomorrow will probably be sunny all day. At night the sky will probably be very clear. You will probably be able to see lots of stars.
