A casual spoken form with several uses. (1) Quoting, instead of と: 'Come home early' って言われた. (2) At the end of a sentence, passing on what you heard (like そうだ). (3) Raising a topic, instead of は or というのは. (4) Instead of という: マリアっていう人. All of these are casual.
田中さん、今日は来られない って。
Tanaka says he can't come today.
母に「早く帰ってきて」って 言われた。
My mom told me, "Come home early."
Pretend to ~ / act as if ~
Shows that someone acts as if something were true when it is not. Verbs are often in the ない, ている, or た form: 知らないふり, 寝ているふり, 聞こえないふり. It can also be used for playing a role in a game.
弟は母に呼ばれても、聞こえないふりをした。
Even when Mom called him, my little brother pretended not to hear.
本当は知らないのに、知っているふりをしてしまった。
I didn't actually know, but I ended up pretending that I did.
リン田中さん、聞いた? 佐藤さん、来月結婚するって。Tanaka, did you hear? Sato is getting married next month.
田中えっ、本当? 佐藤さんからは何も聞いてないけど。What, really? I haven't heard anything from Sato.
リンまだみんなには隠しているみたい。アリさんが教えてくれたの。It seems Sato is still hiding it from everyone. Ali told me.
