Formation
- V辞書形/Vない形/Vた形 + とき
- いA + とき
- なA + な + とき
- N + の + とき
Explanation
A とき B says when B happens: "when A, B." The word before とき is in the plain form; na-adjectives take な and nouns take の. With verbs, the form before とき shows the order of the two actions. Dictionary form + とき means A is not finished yet when B happens; た-form + とき means A is already finished. So 日本へ 来る とき、買いました means "I bought it before arriving in Japan," and 日本へ 来た とき、買いました means "I bought it after arriving."
Examples
子どもの とき、よく 川で 泳ぎました。
When I was a child, I often swam in the river.
暇な とき、うちで 音楽を 聞きます。
When I have free time, I listen to music at home.
日本へ 来る とき、国で 新しい かばんを 買いました。
When I was coming to Japan (before I left), I bought a new bag in my country.
日本へ 来た とき、日本語が あまり 分かりませんでした。
When I came to Japan (after I arrived), I did not understand Japanese very well.
Notes
Do not forget の after a noun and な after a na-adjective (not 子どもとき or 暇とき). The word before とき is not put in the polite form (not 行きますとき).

1私は 学生( )とき、毎日 図書館で 勉強しました。
Answer and explanation
Answer: 3 の
"When I was a student, I studied in the library every day." A noun connects to とき with の, so 学生の とき is correct. な is used after na-adjectives, and だ and に cannot come before とき.
2A「その 時計は どこで 買いましたか。」
B「去年 京都へ( )とき、京都の 店で 買いました。」
Answer and explanation
Answer: 2 行った
A asks where B bought the watch. B says "I bought it at a shop in Kyoto when I went there last year." B bought it in Kyoto, after arriving, so the た-form is needed: 行った とき. 行く とき would mean before getting to Kyoto. 行って and 行きます cannot come before とき.
