N5 Grammar 23/60

〜がほしいです

Want (something)

Formation

  • N + が + ほしいです
  • N + が + ほしくないです(否定)
  • N + が + ほしかったです(過去)

Explanation

This expresses the speaker's wish to have something. The wanted thing is marked with が. ほしい is an i-adjective, so it changes like one: ほしくないです (don't want), ほしかったです (wanted). To ask, say 何がほしいですか.

Examples

  • 新あたらしい 車くるまが ほしいです。

    I want a new car.

  • 誕生日たんじょうびに 何なにが ほしいですか。

What do you want for your birthday?

  • 暑あついですね。冷つめたい 水みずが ほしいです。

It's hot, isn't it? I want some cold water.

  • 今いまは 何なにも ほしくないです。

I don't want anything right now.

Notes

ほしい expresses your own feelings, so 田中さんは車がほしいです sounds unnatural. Asking a superior 何がほしいですか can also sound rude.
