〜がほしいです

Want (something)

Formation
  • N + が + ほしいです
  • N + が + ほしくないです(否定)
  • N + が + ほしかったです(過去)

This expresses the speaker's wish to have something. The wanted thing is marked with が. ほしい is an i-adjective, so it changes like one: ほしくないです (don't want), ほしかったです (wanted). To ask, say 何がほしいですか.

Examples

  • 新あたらしい 車くるまが ほしいです。

    I want a new car.

  • 誕生日たんじょうびに 何なにが ほしいですか。

What do you want for your birthday?

〜たいです

Want to do ~

Formation
  • Vます形 + たいです
  • Vます形 + たくないです(否定)
  • Vます形 + たかったです(過去)

This says what the speaker wants to do. Take the ます form, drop ます and add たいです (行きます → 行きたいです). たい changes like an i-adjective: たくないです, たかったです. The object can take を or が. Use 〜がほしいです for wanting a thing, and 〜たいです for wanting to do something.

Examples

  • 夏休なつやすみに 海うみへ 行いきたいです。

I want to go to the sea during summer vacation.

  • 日本語にほんごを もっと 勉強べんきょうしたいです。
