Explanation
Use N + にする when you choose or decide on one thing from several options. It is common when ordering food and when deciding dates or places. You can also ask 何にしますか (What will you have?) or いつにしましょうか (When shall we make it?). Use 〜にしました for a decision already made.
Examples
(レストランで)私は カレーに します。
(At a restaurant) I'll have the curry.
次の 会議は 来週の 火曜日に しましょう。
Let's make the next meeting next Tuesday.
母の 誕生日の プレゼントは 何に しますか。
What are you going to get for Mom's birthday present?
夏休みの 旅行は 山より 海に しました。
For the summer vacation trip, we chose the sea over the mountains.
Notes
Use V + ことにする to decide on an action, and N + にする to choose a thing, day or place. にする can also mean "make something ~," as in 部屋をきれいにする.
