N3 Grammar 50/60

it's fine if ~; you may ~

Formation

Explanation

てもかまわない means it's no problem if ~. It is used to give or ask for permission, much like てもいい but a little more formal. なくてもかまわない means you don't have to. It can also show that the speaker accepts something: I don't mind if it's small.

Examples

Is it all right if I take photos here?

I don't mind if the room is small, so I'm looking for a cheap place.

The meeting materials can be in English.

If you have something to do, you don't have to come to tomorrow's practice.

Notes

The polite form is てもかまいません. To ask a superior for permission, てもよろしいですか is more polite.
