Explanation
Four main uses. (1) In a passive sentence, it marks who made or discovered something (〜によって書かれた). (2) It shows a method or means. (3) It shows a cause. (4) With 違う or 変わる, it means "varies depending on ~." Before a noun it becomes 〜による + noun. Uses (2) and (3) are somewhat formal.
Examples
この小説は、若い作家によって書かれた。
This novel was written by a young author.
クラスで話し合うことによって、問題を解決した。
We solved the problem by discussing it as a class.
大雨によって、午後の試合は中止になった。
The afternoon game was canceled due to heavy rain.
国によって、食事のマナーは違う。
Table manners differ depending on the country.
Notes
In passives with 書く, 作る, 建てる, 発見する, mark the creator with によって, not に. 〜によっては means "in some cases of ~" (店によっては休みです: some shops are closed).
