Explanation
Used when the speaker firmly judges that "this is what ~ really is" or "this is nothing but ~." It can state the essence of something (それが人生というものだ) or critically evaluate an action (〜なんて無理というものだ). After a verb, it means "(then) it will naturally be the case that ~." Used in writing or fairly formal speech.
Examples
小さな失敗を何度も重ねて上手になる。それが練習というものだ。
You get better by making small mistakes over and over. That's what practice is.
一人で三日のうちに全部終わらせろなんて、無理というものだ。
Telling one person to finish everything within three days is simply impossible.
電車の中で大きな声で電話するのは、迷惑というものだ。
Talking loudly on the phone on the train is a real nuisance.
新しいコピー機が入ったので、これで仕事も少しは楽になるというものだ。
We got a new copy machine, so this should naturally make our work a little easier.
Notes
With な-adjectives and nouns, do not add だ (✗ 無理だというものだ). The negative 〜というものではない has a different meaning: "it is not necessarily true that ~."
