N3 Gramática 51/60

Without doing ~

Formación

Explicación

Same meaning as ~ないで: doing the next action without doing something first. It sounds a little more formal than ~ないで and is common in writing and the news. Take the ない form, drop ない, and add ずに. The verb する is an exception: it becomes せずに, not しずに.

Ejemplos

I went to school without eating breakfast.

I read this book without using a dictionary.

Yesterday Tanaka took the day off work without even contacting anyone.

I went out without an umbrella, and it started to rain.

Notas

A common mistake is しずに; the correct form is せずに. Also, ずに cannot replace ないで in requests: say 忘れないでください, not 忘れずにください.
