受賞のことば An acceptance speech

〜極まる・〜極まりない

Extremely ~ (usually negative)

  • なA(語幹) + 極まる
  • なA(語幹) + 極まりない
  • なA + な + こと + 極まりない
  • いA + こと + 極まりない

Attached to the stem of a na-adjective, it is a written expression meaning 'as ~ as can be'. 極まりない looks negative but means the same as 極まる. It is mostly used with negative words such as 失礼, 危険, 迷惑, 退屈 and shows strong criticism. 感極まる is a set phrase meaning to be overcome with emotion.

  • 運転中うんてんちゅうにスマートフォンを見みるのは 危険きけん極きわまりない。

    Looking at a smartphone while driving is extremely dangerous.

  • 客きゃくの質問しつもんに返事へんじもしないとは、失礼しつれい極きわまる態度たいどだ。

    Not even answering a customer's question is an utterly rude attitude.

〜の至り

The utmost ~ (formal expression of feeling)

Attached to a limited set of nouns such as 光栄, 恐縮, 感激 and 赤面, it expresses the highest degree of that feeling. It is very formal and used in speeches, greetings and letters about one's own feelings. 若気の至り is a set phrase meaning a mistake made because one was young and inexperienced.

  • このような賞しょうをいただき、光栄こうえいの至いたりです。

    It is the greatest honor to receive such an award.

  • 先生せんせいにわざわざお越こしいただき、恐縮きょうしゅくの至いたりです。

    I am deeply grateful that you took the trouble to come, Professor.

本日ほんじつは、このような栄誉えいよある賞しょうをいただき、光栄こうえいの至いたりです。Today I am deeply honored to receive such a prestigious award.

選えらんでくださった皆様みなさまに、心こころよりお礼れい申もうし上あげます。I sincerely thank everyone who chose me.

私わたしが陶芸とうげいを始はじめたのは、二十歳はたちのときでした。I started pottery when I was twenty.

当時とうじの私わたしは、師匠ししょうの山本やまもと先生せんせいに「先生せんせいの器うつわは古ふるいです」と言いったことがあります。Back then, I once told my teacher, Mr. Yamamoto, "Your pottery is old-fashioned."

今いま思おもえば、無礼ぶれい極きわまりない発言はつげんで、まさに若気わかげの至いたりでした。Looking back, it was an extremely rude remark, a true case of youthful folly.

それでも先生せんせいは怒おこらず、「では、新あたらしい器うつわを作つくってみなさい」とおっしゃいました。Even so, he didn't get angry. He said, "Then try making new pottery yourself."

あれから三十年さんじゅうねん、ようやくこうして受賞じゅしょうすることができ、感無量かんむりょうです。Thirty years later, I have finally received this award, and I am overwhelmed.

謙遜けんそんではなく、この賞しょうは先生せんせいが私わたしを見捨みすてなかったおかげだと思おもっています。I am not being modest: I believe this award is thanks to my teacher, who never gave up on me.

先生せんせい、今日きょうはお忙いそがしい中なかお越こしいただき、恐おそれ入いります。そして、あの時ときは本当ほんとうに申もうし訳わけありませんでした。Sensei, thank you for taking the time to come today. And I am truly sorry for what I said back then.

実じつは、今回こんかい受賞じゅしょうした作品さくひんは、あの日ひ「古ふるい」と言いった先生せんせいの器うつわを手本てほんにして作つくったものです。In fact, the piece that won this award was modeled on the very pottery I called "old" that day.

三十年さんじゅうねんかかって、やっと先生せんせいの器うつわのよさが分わかりました。本当ほんとうにありがとうございました。It took me thirty years to finally understand how good your pottery is. Thank you very much.
