Without doing ~
Same meaning as ~ないで: doing the next action without doing something first. It sounds a little more formal than ~ないで and is common in writing and the news. Take the ない form, drop ない, and add ずに. The verb する is an exception: it becomes せずに, not しずに.

Try to ~ / be about to ~
There are two uses. (1) Trying or making an effort to do something, often when it did not work: ~ようとしたが、できなかった. (2) Being just about to do something or for a change to start, often as ~ようとしたとき. Use (2) can also be used for things, not only people. The negative ~ようとしない means someone is not willing to do it.

When you eat bread in space, small crumbs sometimes fly around the room and get into the machines.
A researcher named Haru Yamada tried to invent bread that doesn't make crumbs.
However, the first bread she made was as hard as a stone, and nobody could eat it.
Without giving up, Ms. Yamada repeated the experiment, changing the ingredients and the way of baking little by little.
After the hundredth experiment, Ms. Yamada finally noticed the cause. There wasn't enough water in the bread.
So she tried mixing in a little cooked rice before baking, and the bread became soft and hardly made any crumbs.
Finally, she ate it inside an airplane where things float just like in space, and proved that it made no crumbs.
In this way the research succeeded, and now the bread is a popular menu item among astronauts.
By the way, what happened to that stone-like bread? Just as Ms. Yamada was about to throw it away, someone from the same research institute stopped her, saying "Wait a moment."
Now that bread is very popular with dogs as "a snack that makes teeth strong."
