〜ようにする

Make an effort to ~; make sure to ~

Formação
  • V辞書形 + ようにする
  • Vない形 + ようにする

This means you try or take care to do (or not do) something. You ni shite iru describes an ongoing habit or effort. You ni shite kudasai is a soft request: 'please make sure to ~'. You ni naru describes a change that happens, while you ni suru describes your own effort.

Exemplos

  • 健康けんこうの ために、毎日まいにち 野菜やさいを 食たべるように して います。

    For my health, I make a point of eating vegetables every day.

  • 寝ねる 前まえは スマホを 見みないように して います。

    I try not to look at my phone before going to bed.

Decide to ~ (one's own decision)

Formação
  • V辞書形 + ことにする
  • Vない形 + ことにする

This expresses a decision the speaker makes by themselves. Koto ni shimasu is deciding now, koto ni shimashita is having decided, and koto ni shite imasu is a personal rule or habit decided earlier and still kept. It is not used for things you cannot decide, like the weather.

  • 夏休なつやすみに 友ともだちと 京都きょうとへ 行いくことに しました。

    I decided to go to Kyoto with my friends during summer vacation.

  • 体からだの ために、お酒さけを 飲のまないことに しました。

    For my health, I decided not to drink alcohol.

佐藤実じつは、夜中よなかまで ゲームを する 習慣しゅうかんを やめる ことに したんです。前まえは 毎晩まいばん 三時さんじごろまで して いて、朝あさ 起おきられなかったんです。Actually, I decided to quit my habit of playing games until the middle of the night. I used to play until about three every night, and I couldn't get up in the morning.

マリアそれで、今いまは どうして いるんですか。So what do you do now?

佐藤夜よるは 十二時じゅうにじには 寝ねるように して います。それから、毎朝まいあさ 必かならず 食事しょくじを するように して います。I make sure to be in bed by twelve at night. And I make a point of always eating a meal every morning.

マリアすごいですね。十分じゅうぶん 寝ねると、体からだも 元気げんきに なりますね。That's great. When you sleep enough, your body gets healthier, too.

佐藤はい。食たべ物ものにも 気きを つけるように なりました。Yes. I've also started paying attention to what I eat.

マリアじゃあ、ゲームは もう 全然ぜんぜん しないんですか。So you don't play games at all anymore?

佐藤いいえ、して いますよ。今いまは 朝あさ 五時ごじに 起おきて、会社かいしゃに 行いく 前まえに する ことに したんです。Oh, I still play. I've decided to get up at five in the morning and play before I go to work.

マリア……佐藤さとうさん、それは 夜中よなかが 朝あさに 変かわった だけですね。...Mr. Sato, you've just changed the middle of the night into the morning.
