Make an effort to ~; make sure to ~
This means you try or take care to do (or not do) something. You ni shite iru describes an ongoing habit or effort. You ni shite kudasai is a soft request: 'please make sure to ~'. You ni naru describes a change that happens, while you ni suru describes your own effort.
健康の ために、毎日 野菜を 食べるように して います。
For my health, I make a point of eating vegetables every day.
寝る 前は スマホを 見ないように して います。
I try not to look at my phone before going to bed.
Decide to ~ (one's own decision)
This expresses a decision the speaker makes by themselves. Koto ni shimasu is deciding now, koto ni shimashita is having decided, and koto ni shite imasu is a personal rule or habit decided earlier and still kept. It is not used for things you cannot decide, like the weather.
夏休みに 友だちと 京都へ 行くことに しました。
I decided to go to Kyoto with my friends during summer vacation.
体の ために、お酒を 飲まないことに しました。
For my health, I decided not to drink alcohol.
マリア佐藤さん、最近 元気ですね。何か あったんですか。Mr. Sato, you've been looking well lately. Did something happen?
佐藤実は、夜中まで ゲームを する 習慣を やめる ことに したんです。前は 毎晩 三時ごろまで して いて、朝 起きられなかったんです。Actually, I decided to quit my habit of playing games until the middle of the night. I used to play until about three every night, and I couldn't get up in the morning.
マリアそれで、今は どうして いるんですか。So what do you do now?
佐藤夜は 十二時には 寝るように して います。それから、毎朝 必ず 食事を するように して います。I make sure to be in bed by twelve at night. And I make a point of always eating a meal every morning.
マリアすごいですね。十分 寝ると、体も 元気に なりますね。That's great. When you sleep enough, your body gets healthier, too.
