The more ~, the more ~
AばAほどB means "the more A, the more B." The same word is repeated: first in the ば-form, then before ほど. For な-adjectives, use 静かなら静かなほど or 静かであれば静かであるほど. The second part often describes a change, such as 〜なる or 上手になる.
日本語は 勉強すればするほど、おもしろくなる。
The more I study Japanese, the more interesting it gets.
野菜は 新しければ新しいほど おいしい。
The fresher vegetables are, the better they taste.
So ~ that ~ (degree) / the more ~
ほど has two main uses. (1) Degree: it shows how extreme something is by giving an example, as in 歩けないほど疲れた ("so tired I couldn't walk"). (2) Proportion: a short form of 〜ば〜ほど, meaning "the more A, the more B," as in 駅に近いほど高い. The second use usually describes a general tendency.
昨日は一日中歩いて、もう歩けないほど 疲れた。
I walked all day yesterday and was so tired I couldn't walk anymore.
週末なのに、山ほど 仕事が残っている。
Even though it's the weekend, I have a mountain of work left.
先生リンさん、今日はとても上手に弾けていますね。Lin, you're playing really well today.
リンありがとうございます。この一週間、指が痛くなるほど練習しました。Thank you. This past week, I practiced so much that my fingers hurt.
先生そうですか。ギターは、練習すればするほど上達する楽器ですよ。I see. The guitar is an instrument you get better at the more you practice.
リンでも、私には才能がないんじゃないかと思って、自信がなかったんです。But I thought maybe I had no talent, so I wasn't confident.
先生才能より、夢中になれるかどうかが大切です。リンさんはいつも楽しそうに弾いていますよ。Being able to get absorbed in it matters more than talent. You always look like you're having fun when you play.
リン実は、ある日本の歌を聞いて感動して、自分でも弾きながら歌いたくなったんです。日本語の発音の練習にもなりますから。Actually, I was moved by a Japanese song and wanted to sing it while playing. It's also good pronunciation practice for Japanese.
先生いいですね。じゃあ、一度歌ってみてください。That's nice. Well then, please try singing it once.
リン……どうでしたか。...How was it?
先生ギターはすばらしかったです。歌は……そうですね、ギターと同じで、練習すればするほど上手になりますよ。Your guitar was wonderful. Your singing... well, just like the guitar, it will get better the more you practice.
リンえっ! それは、歌はまだまだだということですね。What! So you mean my singing still has a long way to go.

R1リンさんは、この一週間、どのように練習しましたか。
Resposta: 3 指が痛くなるまで、たくさん練習した。
Lin says he practiced so much that his fingers hurt. Here 〜ほど shows the degree: he practiced a lot, to the point of pain.
R2先生は、リンさんの歌についてどう思っていますか。
Resposta: 2 まだあまり上手ではない。
The teacher praised the guitar but only said the singing will get better with practice. Lin understands this means his singing still needs a lot of work.
1このピアノの曲はとても美しくて、聞いた人はみんな( )した。
Resposta: 4 感動
"This piano piece was so beautiful that everyone who heard it was moved." 感動する means to be deeply moved. 夢中 is used as 夢中になる and 自信 as 自信がある, and 上達 does not fit the meaning.
2ゲームに( )になって、宿題を忘れてしまった。
Resposta: 2 夢中
"I got so absorbed in the game that I forgot my homework." 〜に夢中になる means to become absorbed in something. The other words are not used with になる like this.
3何度も練習したので、明日の試合には( )がある。
Resposta: 1 自信
"I practiced many times, so I'm confident about tomorrow's game." 自信がある means to be confident. The other words do not make sense in this sentence.
4この本は、読め( )読むほどおもしろくなる。
Resposta: 3 ば
"The more you read this book, the more interesting it gets." The pattern is Vば + the dictionary form + ほど, so 読めば読むほど is correct.
5疲れていて、立っていられない( )眠かった。
Resposta: 2 ほど
"I was tired, and so sleepy that I couldn't stay standing." ほど shows the degree of sleepiness. とたん follows the た form, and ついでに and 最中 do not fit the meaning.
6正しい文はどれですか。
Resposta: 4 練習すればするほど、上手になる。
"The more you practice, the better you get." The ば form of する is すれば, followed by the dictionary form する + ほど. するば, したほど and しても are wrong.
7何か楽器が弾けますか。
Resposta: 1 がっき
楽器 is read がっき (musical instrument). 楽 is がく, but before 器 (き) it becomes がっ. "Can you play any instrument?"
8日本語の発音を練習する。
Resposta: 3 はつおん
発音 is read はつおん (pronunciation). Here 音 uses the on-reading おん. "I practice Japanese pronunciation."
