Learn to say that a common idea is not always true with 〜ばいいというものではない, and to give a modest yes with 〜ないことはない (it's not that I can't).

It is not necessarily true that ~

N(+だ) + というものではない

Used to partly deny a common idea or a simple assumption: "that is not always the case." It often follows 〜ばいい, 〜ば, or 〜さえ〜ば, as in 安ければいいというものではない. It does not deny everything; it means "that alone is not enough." 〜というものでもない is a slightly softer version.

Exemplos

値段ねだんが安やすければいいというものではない。品質ひんしつも大切たいせつだ。

Cheap isn't necessarily good. Quality matters too.
長ながい時間じかん勉強べんきょうすれば成績せいせきが上あがるというものではない。

Studying for long hours doesn't necessarily raise your grades.

〜ないことはない

It's not that ~ not; ~ is possible, though not ideal

Formação

Vない形 + ことはない
いA(〜くない) + ことはない
なA + で/じゃ + ないことはない
N + で/じゃ + ないことはない

A double negative that gives a hesitant yes: "it's not that ~ not" or "~ is possible." For example, 行けないことはない means "I could go if I tried, but it's a bit hard." It is often followed by けど or が with a condition or one's true feeling. 〜ないこともない is the same but even more reserved.

Exemplos

納豆なっとうは食たべられないことはないけど、あまり好すきじゃない。

It's not that I can't eat natto, but I don't really like it.
タクシーで行いけば、会議かいぎに間まに合あわないことはない。

If we take a taxi, it's not impossible to make it to the meeting in time.

リン先生せんせい、試験しけんまであと二週間にしゅうかんなので、毎晩まいばん五時間ごじかん勉強べんきょうするつもりです。Teacher, the exam is two weeks away, so I plan to study five hours every night.

先生やる気きがあるのはいいけど、長ながい時間じかん勉強べんきょうすればいいというものではないよ。Your motivation is good, but studying for a long time is not necessarily the answer.

リンでも、前まえの試験しけんは三時間さんじかんしかやらなかったから、成績せいせきが悪わるかったんだと思おもいます。But I think my results were bad last time because I only studied three hours.

先生大事だいじなのは効率こうりつだよ。疲つかれた頭あたまでは集中しゅうちゅうできないし、長ながく机つくえに向むかっている人ひとが必かならずしも成績せいせきがいいわけではないんだ。What matters is efficiency. A tired mind can't concentrate, and people who sit at their desks for a long time don't necessarily get good grades.

リンじゃあ、どうすればいいんですか。Then what should I do?

先生毎日まいにち少すこしずつ復習ふくしゅうするほうが、日本語にほんごの能力のうりょくは伸のびるよ。一日いちにち一時間いちじかんならどう?Reviewing a little every day will improve your Japanese more. How about one hour a day?

リン一時間いちじかんですか……。アルバイトもありますけど、続つづけられないことはないです。One hour... I have my part-time job too, but it's not as if I couldn't keep it up.

先生それから、単語たんごを身みにつけるには、覚おぼえ方かたを工夫くふうするといい。電車でんしゃの中なかで覚おぼえるとかね。Also, to really learn vocabulary, try new ways of memorizing, like studying on the train.

リンそれなら今日きょうからできます。スマホでゲームをする時間じかんを単語たんごの時間じかんにします。I can do that starting today. I'll turn my phone game time into vocabulary time.

先生いい考かんがえだね。ところで、ゲームは毎日まいにちどのくらいしているの?Good idea. By the way, how long do you play games every day?

リンえっと……毎晩まいばん五時間ごじかんぐらいです。Um... about five hours every night.
