There are two uses. (1) Dictionary form + までだ: if one way fails, I will simply take another; it shows calm resolve, often after なら, ば or ても. (2) Ta-form + までだ: I only did ~, with no special reason or intention; used to play down thanks or to explain oneself. までのことだ has the same meaning and sounds a little more formal.
バスがないなら、駅まで 歩くまでだ。
If there is no bus, I'll just walk to the station.
今年の試験に落ちたら、また来年 受けるまでのことだ。
If I fail this year's exam, I'll simply take it again next year.
If ~ happens, it is all over / all wasted
It means that if a certain thing happens, everything ends there and all earlier effort is wasted. It often appears as どんなに〜ても、…ばそれまでだ. The set phrase 〜と言ってしまえばそれまでだ means 'if you put it that way, there is nothing more to say', usually followed by が and a different point of view.
どんなに勉強しても、試験の日に 寝坊すればそれまでだ。
No matter how hard you study, if you oversleep on the exam day, it's all over.
旅行の計画をしっかり立てても、台風が 来たらそれまでだ。
Even if you plan a trip carefully, if a typhoon comes, that's the end of it.
私は高校生のころから、海外で建築を学びたいという志を持っていた。Ever since high school, I have had the ambition to study architecture abroad.
