There are two uses. (1) Dictionary form + までだ: if one way fails, I will simply take another; it shows calm resolve, often after なら, ば or ても. (2) Ta-form + までだ: I only did ~, with no special reason or intention; used to play down thanks or to explain oneself. までのことだ has the same meaning and sounds a little more formal.

Ever since high school, I have had the ambition to study architecture abroad.

But when I thought about the cost, I could never quite take the first step.

Last year I finally applied for a scholarship, but I was rejected. My study-abroad plan stalled, and I almost gave it up.

Just then, my grandmother said, "Any plan is finished if you hesitate and don't act."

Those words made me decide to try again. If I can't get a scholarship, I'll simply work and save the money.

Now I work at a café during the day and keep studying the language at night.

It's not an easy life, but it's the path I chose, so I'm prepared.

The other day, I thanked my grandmother: "It's all thanks to your words."

She laughed and said, "That was a line I heard on a TV drama."

I thought, "Oh, is that all?" But it doesn't matter. Whoever's words they were, they still gave me the push I needed.
