व्याख्या

Means that, given the situation or social common sense, one cannot get by without doing something; it will have to be done. It is used for duties or unavoidable results such as apologizing, paying, explaining or being held responsible. The pressure comes from the circumstances rather than the person's own will.

उदाहरण

会社かいしゃの大切たいせつな資料しりょうをなくしたのだから、部長ぶちょうに 謝あやまらずにはすまない。

I lost an important company document, so I will have to apologize to the department manager.
友人ゆうじんの車くるまに傷きずをつけてしまった。修理代しゅうりだいを 払はらわずにはすまないだろう。

I scratched my friend's car. I'll probably have to pay for the repair.
これだけ大おおきなミスをすれば、担当者たんとうしゃは 責任せきにんを問とわれずにはすまない。

After such a big mistake, the person in charge cannot escape being held responsible.
試験しけんを無断むだんで休やすんだ以上いじょう、先生せんせいに事情じじょうを 説明せつめいせずにはすまない。

Since I missed the exam without notice, I will have to explain the situation to my teacher.

टिप्पणी

〜ないではすまない has the same meaning and is slightly more conversational. Do not confuse it with 〜ずにはおかない (will inevitably cause / will surely do).
