Learn to say far from ~ / let alone ~ with 〜どころか, and this is no time for ~ with 〜どころではない. Then read a conversation about the busy end of the year.

年末ねんまつは、どの店みせも客きゃくでいっぱいだ。

At the end of the year, every shop is full of customers.

Far from ~ / let alone ~

  • なA(語幹) + どころか
  • いA + どころか
  • V普通形 + どころか

Two uses. (1) "Far from ~": the actual result is the opposite of what was expected (it got worse instead of better). (2) A どころか B も: "not only A, but not even B" — B is something easier or more basic, often marked with も or さえ. Both show surprise or dissatisfaction.

  • 薬くすりを飲のんだのに、風邪かぜは 治なおるどころか、ますますひどくなった。

    I took medicine, but far from getting better, my cold got worse and worse.

  • 予約よやくしたホテルは静しずかどころか、一晩中ひとばんじゅう外そとの車くるまの音おとがうるさかった。

    Far from being quiet, the hotel I booked was noisy with traffic all night.

This is no time for ~ / in no position to ~

  • V辞書形 + どころではない

Means there is something more important or serious going on, so you are in no situation to do ~. It is often used when there is no room for fun or ordinary activities. In speech it becomes どころじゃない, and for the past, どころではなかった.

နမူနာများ

  • 明日あしたは大事だいじな試験しけんだから、映画えいがどころではない。

    I have an important exam tomorrow, so this is no time for a movie.

  • 仕事しごとが山やまのようにあって、昼ひるご飯はんを 食たべるどころではなかった。

    I had a mountain of work, so I was in no position to eat lunch.

佐藤休やすみを取とるどころか、毎日まいにち残業ざんぎょうだよ。締しめ切きりに追おわれて、昨日きのうは徹夜てつやしたんだ。Far from taking time off, I'm working overtime every day. I'm swamped with deadlines, and yesterday I stayed up all night.

田中徹夜てつやですか。だからそんなにぐったりしているんですね。All night? That's why you look so worn out.

佐藤今週中こんしゅうちゅうにこの仕事しごとを全部ぜんぶ片付かたづけないといけなくて、ほかのことを考かんがえる余裕よゆうがないんだ。I have to finish all this work by the end of the week, so I have no room to think about anything else.

田中じゃあ、金曜日きんようびの忘年会ぼうねんかいはどうしますか。Then what about the year-end party on Friday?

佐藤忘年会ぼうねんかいどころじゃないよ。悪わるいけど、今年ことしは欠席けっせきさせてもらうね。This is no time for a year-end party. Sorry, but I'll have to skip it this year.

田中そうですか、残念ざんねんです。でも、一ひとつ困こまったことがあって……。I see, that's a shame. But there's one problem...

佐藤何なに?What is it?

田中今年ことしの忘年会ぼうねんかいの幹事かんじ、佐藤さとうさんですよね。お店みせの予約よやくはもうしてありますか。You're the organizer of this year's party, aren't you? Have you already booked the restaurant?

佐藤あっ、すっかり忘わすれてた……。これじゃ、仕事しごとが減へるどころか、また増ふえたよ。Oh no, I completely forgot... So far from having less work, I now have even more.

田中予約よやくは私わたしがしておきますよ。佐藤さとうさんは締しめ切きりのほうを頑張がんばってください。I'll make the booking. You focus on your deadlines.

ぐったりする means to be completely exhausted. "After walking around all day, I was worn out when I got home."

AどころかB means far from A, actually B (the opposite). "Far from apologizing, he complained to me." どころではない means there is no room for something, so it does not fit.

Nどころではない means there is no room at all for N in a difficult situation. "I have a fever of 39 degrees, so traveling is out of the question." っこない attaches to a verb stem, not a noun.

After やせるどころか comes the opposite of losing weight. "I started a diet, but far from losing weight, I gained three kilos." 1, 2 and 3 all say the person lost weight.

どころじゃない is the casual form of どころではない. "Sorry, with moving preparations, I have no time for movies." どころか cannot end a sentence.
