Today's grammar

〜に(時間)

At / on / in: marks when an action happens

Formation
  • N(時刻・曜日・日付・月・年) + に + V
  • 今日・明日・毎日・来週・いつ など + V(「に」をつけない)

に after a time word shows when an action happens. Use に with time words that contain a number: clock times (七時に), dates (五日に), months (四月に) and years (2026年に). With days of the week, に is optional (日曜日に or 日曜日). Do not use に with words such as 今日, 明日, 毎朝, 来週 and 去年. To ask, use 何時に, 何曜日に, or いつ (without に).

Examples

  • 私わたしは 毎朝まいあさ 六時ろくじに 起おきます。

I get up at six every morning.

  • 日曜日にちようびに 友達ともだちの うちへ 行いきます。

I'm going to my friend's house on Sunday.

〜と

And (joining nouns); with (a person)

Formation
  • N1 + と + N2
  • N(人) + と + V
  • N(人) + と + いっしょに + V

と has two uses. First, it joins nouns: A と B means "A and B" and lists all the items (パンと 卵, bread and eggs). Second, it marks the person you do something with: 友達と 行きます (I go with a friend). You can add いっしょに (together): 友達と いっしょに 行きます. Ask about the partner with だれと (with whom). When you do something alone, say 一人で.

Examples

  • 毎朝まいあさ パンと 卵たまごを 食たべます。

I eat bread and eggs every morning.

  • 休やすみは 土曜日どようびと 日曜日にちようびです。

My days off are Saturday and Sunday.

R2リンさんは 日曜日にちようび 何時なんじに 起おきますか。

Quiz

1朝あさ 七時しちじに 起おきます。夜よる 十一時じゅういちじに ベッドで ( )。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 2 寝ねます

"I get up at seven in the morning. At eleven at night, I ( ) in bed." What you do in bed at night is 寝ます (sleep). 会います (meet) and 帰ります (go home) do not fit ベッドで.

2私わたしは 毎朝まいあさ 六時ろくじ( ) 起おきます。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 3 に

"I get up at six every morning." A clock time such as 六時 takes に. を, で and と do not mark a point in time.

3図書館としょかんで 友ともだちと 日本語にほんごを ( )。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 1 勉強べんきょうします

"I ( ) Japanese with my friend at the library." After 日本語を, 勉強します (study) fits. 寝ます, 起きます and 帰ります do not take an object with を.

4私わたしは 友ともだち( ) 図書館としょかんへ 行いきます。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 2 と

"I go to the library with my friend." と after a person means "with." が does not fit because 私は is already the subject, and を and へ do not make sense here.

5A:毎日まいにち ( )に 起おきますか。 B:六時ろくじです。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 4 何時なんじ

A asks "What time do you get up every day?" B answers with a time (六時です), so 何時 (what time) fits. 何 asks about things, だれ about people, and どこ about places.

6( ) 日本語にほんごを 勉強べんきょうします。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 3 毎日まいにち

"I study Japanese every day." 毎日 does not take に. 七時 needs に, not を, and 夜を is also wrong.

7佐藤さとうさん( ) 田中たなかさんは 会社員かいしゃいんです。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 4 と

"Sato-san and Tanaka-san are office workers." To join two nouns with "and," use と. に, を and で cannot join nouns.

8夜 十時じゅうじに 寝ねます。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 1 よる

夜 is read よる (night). The sentence means "I go to bed at ten at night."
