Contrary to (expectations); against (rules or wishes)
Formation
- N + に反して
- N + に反し(書き言葉)
- N + に反する + N
- N + に反した + N
There are two uses. (1) With nouns like 予想 (expectation), 期待 (hopes) or 予報 (forecast), it shows that the result was the opposite of what was expected. (2) With nouns like 規則 (rules), 法律 (law) or 意思 (wishes), it means going against them or breaking them. Before a noun, use に反する N or に反した N. It is a formal expression often seen in news and reports.
Examples
大方の予想に反して、新人の田中さんが優勝した。
Contrary to most people's predictions, Tanaka, a newcomer, won the championship.
両親の期待に反して、兄は大学を辞めて料理人になった。
Against our parents' hopes, my older brother quit university and became a cook.
〜にもかかわらず
In spite of ~; although ~
Formation
- V普通形 + にもかかわらず
- いA普通形 + にもかかわらず
- なA / なA + である + にもかかわらず(過去: なA + だった)
- N / N + である + にもかかわらず(過去: N + だった)
It shows that the result is different from what you would normally expect from the first fact. It often carries surprise, dissatisfaction or admiration. The meaning is close to 〜のに, but it is more formal and used in writing or formal speech. It can also start a sentence as それにもかかわらず.
Examples
雨にもかかわらず、大勢の人がお祭りに来た。
Despite the rain, a lot of people came to the festival.
何度も注意したにもかかわらず、彼はまた遅刻した。
Although I warned him many times, he was late again.

リンアリさん、昨日の試合、見に行ったんですよね。あんなに大雨だったのに。Ali, you went to see yesterday's match, didn't you? Even though it was pouring.
アリはい。大雨にもかかわらず、スタジアムには一万人もの人が応援に来ていましたよ。Yes. In spite of the heavy rain, as many as ten thousand people came to the stadium to cheer.
リンすごいですね。でも、相手は去年の優勝チームでしょう? 結果はどうでしたか。Amazing. But the other team won the championship last year, right? What was the result?
アリそれが、みんなの予想に反して、地元のチームが勝ったんです!Well, contrary to everyone's predictions, our local team won!
リンえっ、本当ですか。意外ですね。What, really? That's a surprise.
アリ前半はゼロ対二で負けていて、本当に悔しかったんです。でも、後半に三点入れて、最後の一分で逆転したんですよ。In the first half we were losing zero to two, and it was really frustrating. But in the second half we scored three goals and came back to win in the last minute.
リン選手たちの毎日の努力が、結果につながったんですね。So the players' daily effort led to the result.
アリそうですね。ただ、一つだけ惜しいことがあって……。That's right. There's just one thing that's a pity, though...
リン何ですか。What is it?
アリ雨でめがねがぬれて何も見えなくなって、ふいている間に、逆転のゴールが入ったんです。My glasses got wet in the rain and I couldn't see anything, and while I was wiping them, the winning goal went in.
リンえっ、いちばん大事な場面を見ていないんですか。What? You didn't see the most important moment?
アリはい。だから今夜は、ニュースでそのゴールを何度も見るつもりです。No. So tonight, I'm going to watch that goal over and over on the news.
