N5 Grammar 31/60

〜てもいいです

May / it is okay to do ~ (permission)

Formation

  • Vて形 + も + いいです
  • Vて形 + も + いいですか

Explanation

〜てもいいです says that doing something is allowed. As a question, 〜てもいいですか asks for permission: "May I ~?" To say yes, answer はい、いいですよ or はい、どうぞ. To say no, people usually soften it with すみません、ちょっと…… rather than a flat refusal. When a rule clearly forbids something, 〜てはいけません is used.

Examples

  • ここで 写真しゃしんを 撮とってもいいですか。

May I take a photo here?

  • 宿題しゅくだいは えんぴつで 書かいてもいいです。

You may write your homework in pencil.

  • A: すみません、この ペンを 借かりてもいいですか。
    B: はい、どうぞ。

A: Excuse me, may I borrow this pen? B: Yes, go ahead.

  • 今日きょうの 仕事しごとは 終おわりました。もう 帰かえってもいいです。

Today's work is finished. You may go home now.

Notes

When asking a teacher or boss, 〜てもいいでしょうか or 〜てもよろしいですか is more polite. Do not use 〜てもいいです to give permission to someone above you. With friends, say 〜てもいい? as in これ、使ってもいい?

1すみません、ここに( )いいですか。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 3 座すわっても

"Excuse me, may I sit here?" 〜てもいいですか attaches も to the て-form of the verb. The て-form of 座ります is 座って, so the answer is 座っても. The other three are not correct verb forms.

2A: 先生せんせい、トイレに( )。
B: はい、どうぞ。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 1 行いってもいいですか

A asks "Teacher, may I go to the toilet?" and B answers "Yes, go ahead." B is giving permission, so A must be asking for it with 〜てもいいですか. 行ってください is a request to the teacher, and 行きましょうか is an offer, so the reply はい、どうぞ does not fit them.

3この __ __ _★_ __ ですか。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 2 使つかっても

The correct order is 3→4→2→1: この 辞書を 使っても いいですか (May I use this dictionary?). この must be followed by a noun, and いい comes right after 使っても, so ★ is 使っても.
