て形

The te-form of verbs (linking actions: do ~ and ~)

Formation

Explanation

The te-form links a verb to what comes next. Its basic use is to list actions in the order they happen: 起きて、顔を洗って、朝ごはんを食べます. The tense is shown only by the last verb. Many patterns, such as 〜てください and 〜ています, are built on it. How to make it depends on the verb group and its last sound; note the exception 行く → 行って.

Examples

  • 朝あさ 起おきて、顔かおを 洗あらって、朝あさごはんを 食たべます。

In the morning I get up, wash my face, and eat breakfast.

  • 昨日きのうは デパートへ 行いって、靴くつを 買かいました。

Yesterday I went to a department store and bought shoes.

  • 図書館としょかんで 本ほんを 読よんで、家いえへ 帰かえりました。

I read a book at the library and went home.

  • 毎晩まいばん 宿題しゅくだいを して、十一時じゅういちじに 寝ねます。

Every night I do my homework and go to bed at eleven.

Notes

行く becomes 行って, not 行いて. 帰る, 入る and 知る end in る but are group 1 verbs, so they become 帰って, 入って, 知って.
