N4 Grammar 12/60

intend to ~; plan to ~

Formation

Explanation

つもり expresses a plan or intention that someone has already decided in their mind. It sounds firmer than 〜ようと思う. The usual negative is 〜ないつもりだ (intend not to ~). You can ask about someone's plans with 〜つもりですか.

Examples

I intend to take the Japanese exam next year.

I'm not planning to go anywhere this summer.

After I go back to my country, I intend to become a teacher.

My father said he intends to quit smoking from next month.

Notes

To say you have decided not to do something, use 行くつもりはありません is a stronger denial. Asking a superior 〜つもりですか can sound rude, so 〜ますか is safer.

Mini quiz

Answer and explanation

Answer: 4

I plan to relax at home on my next day off. つもり follows the dictionary form, so 休む is correct. The volitional form and the ます form do not connect to つもり.

Answer and explanation

Answer: 2

It's bad for my health, so I don't intend to eat sweets anymore. The reason points to not eating, so 食べない + つもり is correct. 食べる contradicts the reason, and 食べよう does not connect to つもり.

Answer and explanation

Answer: 3

'Are you going home for the summer holidays?' 'Yes, I plan to go back in August.' The dictionary form connects directly to つもり, with no の. 帰り and 帰った are wrong here.
