Explanation
There are two uses. (1) Explaining what a word means: X というのは Y のことだ / Y という意味だ. (2) Giving a reason afterward: put というのは、 at the start of the next sentence and end it with 〜からだ or 〜のだ. Use (2) means the same as なぜかというと ("the reason is that").
Examples
「駅前」というのは、駅の前のあたりのことです。
Ekimae means the area in front of the station.
「一人暮らし」というのは、家族と離れて一人で住むことです。
Hitorigurashi means living alone, away from your family.
来週のパーティーには行けません。というのは、その日は出張があるからです。
I can't go to the party next week. The reason is that I have a business trip that day.
今年の夏は旅行に行かないことにした。というのは、飛行機のチケットがとても高かったのだ。
I decided not to travel this summer. That's because the plane tickets were very expensive.
Notes
In use (2), don't forget to end the sentence with からだ or のだ. In casual speech, use (1) is often shortened to って (一人暮らしって…).
