〜てからというもの

Ever since A, things have changed (and stayed changed)

Formation

  • Vて形 + からというもの

Explanation

A てからというもの B means that ever since A, which was a turning point, the state in B has continued. B describes a big change in behavior or circumstances compared to before. It sounds more emotional than plain てから. B cannot be a single event, an intention or a command.

Examples

  • 犬いぬを 飼かい始はじめてからというもの、毎朝まいあさ散歩さんぽするようになった。

    Ever since I got a dog, I've been going for a walk every morning.

  • 彼女かのじょは留学りゅうがくから 帰かえってきてからというもの、前まえよりずっと積極的せっきょくてきになった。

    Since she came back from studying abroad, she has become much more outgoing.

  • スマートフォンを 持もってからというもの、本ほんをあまり読よまなくなった。

    Ever since I got a smartphone, I hardly read books anymore.

  • 新あたらしい部長ぶちょうが 来きてからというもの、職場しょくばの雰囲気ふんいきが明あかるくなった。

    Since the new manager arrived, the atmosphere at work has become much brighter.

Notes

It is not normally used for very recent events like yesterday. The second part often uses forms showing a continuing state, such as ようになった, なくなった or ている.

The second part must be a lasting state. 2 means: Ever since I started going to cooking classes, I make my own lunch every day. 1 is a one-time event, 3 a future plan, and 4 a request.

3祖母そぼは孫まごが生うまれて(  )、毎日まいにち楽たのしそうにしている。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 3 からというもの

The sentence means: Ever since her grandchild was born, my grandmother has looked happy every day. からには expresses resolve, からといって means just because, and からでないと gives a condition.
