〜ならでは

Unique to ~; something only ~ can offer

Formation

  • N + ならではの + N
  • N + ならではだ

Explanation

Used as N ならではの N or N ならではだ to describe a special quality that only that person, place, or group has. It is almost always positive praise and is rarely used for bad features. Compared with らしい, it stresses that nothing else can offer the same thing.

Examples

  • この細こまやかなサービスは、老舗しにせの旅館りょかんならではだ。

    This attentive service is something only a long-established inn can offer.

  • 京都きょうとならではの景色けしきを撮とろうと、朝あさ早はやくから寺てらに出でかけた。

    I went out to a temple early in the morning to photograph scenery you can only see in Kyoto.

  • 子こどもならではの自由じゆうな発想はっそうに、大人おとなたちは驚おどろかされた。

    The adults were surprised by the free thinking that only children have.

  • 小ちいさな会社かいしゃならではの良よさは、社長しゃちょうと直接ちょくせつ話はなせることだ。

    The good thing about a small company is that you can talk directly with the president.

Notes

It attaches only to nouns. An older form, N ならでは〜ない, means "cannot ~ unless it is N."

Answer: 1 ならではだ

This fun atmosphere is unique to a small-town festival. At the end of a sentence the form is ならではだ. ならではの needs a noun after it, and ならではに or ならではで cannot end the sentence.

3「ならでは」の使つかい方かたが正ただしい文ぶんはどれですか。

Answer and explanation

Answer: 2 地元じもとの人ひとならではの店みせの選えらび方かたを教おしえてもらった。

2 means "how to choose shops, something only locals know," which is correct. 1 and 3 do not express a special quality, and 4 is wrong in both form and meaning.
